Throughout America, hundreds of thousands of people are securing firearms, jewelry, family keepsakes and vital documents in Browning ProSteel Safes and are protecting family members and valuables with ProSteel security, vault and storm doors. Founded in 1947, ProSteel is headquartered in Provo, Utah.
In 1947, F. L. "Shorty" Shurtliff started a business with $600 and an idea that a quality metal working shop was needed in the area. The Provo Steel & Supply Company began supporting the construction industry of Provo, Utah, and soon was providing steel handrails, stairwells and structural steel to Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Nevada.
In the early 1960s, Shorty Shurtliff secured a contract with the original Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This contract propelled the company from a small job shop to a major supplier of structural steel products.
One day, a friend of Shortys came to the plant to have some equipment repaired. He talked to Shorty about a need for a safe to store his guns and valuables. Ever the opportunist, Shorty told the man that he could build a safe. In February 1977, ProSteel began manufacturing gun safes.
Just as the structural steel business grew by providing quality products and services, the safe business was founded on the same principles. Similar to his original business, the security and gun safes were sold and marketed by word-of-mouth. Sales and deliveries were transacted from the back of a pickup truck. The gun safes were sold as an accessory product to complement his existing business but soon the demand for safes consumed ProSteel's entire manufacturing capacity. With the company at a crossroads, Shorty chose to concentrate solely on the gun safe business.
ProSteel established an independent dealer network and gun safes were sold throughout the United States. Browning, located in Morgan, Utah, inquired about the possibility of marketing gun safes to their dealers. In January of 1983, an agreement was reached making ProSteel the exclusive supplier of Browning ProSteel gun safes.
Still headquartered in Provo, Utah, ProSteel Security Products was acquired in March 2011 by Promus Equity Partners.
ProSteel and Browning have been partners for almost 30 years. ProSteel continues to grow through outstanding product development, quality manufacturing and Browning's distribution to independent dealers as well as major retail chains. Browning ProSteel Safes are regarded as a leader in firearm security.
Still fully committed to the firearm security business, ProSteel also develops security, tornado, hurricane and vault doors.
